An Unbelievable Sea of Menorahs + Favorite Janusz Korczak Quotes – Part 415th November 2017

What an an unbelievable sight to see! I got a shipment of 35 Janusz Korczak menorahs last Thursday. I ordered 50 more menorahs, several of which are already sold, and Gary Rosenthal told me that this is all they can promise to deliver by Hanukkah. WOW!

We have raised over $5,200 for the Holocaust Resource Center!

Thank you so much for everyone’s support! If you want to see a video of the line-up of menorahs, check this out.

For the last few newsletters, I’ve been writing about the Janusz Korczak menorah project, (Part1, Part 2, Part 3). I am so excited that several newspapers and magazines around the country are going to write about it, including Hadassah Magazine and New York Newsday!

Gary Rosenthal is generously making the Janusz Korczak menorahs for us at cost. However, I would be remiss not to show off the other gorgeous menorahs and dreidels in our collection made by Gary Rosenthal.

Another menorah that is popular year-round is the Personalized Name Menorah by the talented artists, Gary and Debby Markow of Naturally Wood Creations. They also create the most unique menorah I’ve ever seen – the Multi-Design Menorah, which comes in several different woods. This menorah is SUPER COOL! Kids of all ages love this menorah for the creativity it inspires. The arms swing out so you can have a different design for every night of Hanukkah.

Since I have been spending most of my Jewish Gift Place time on the The Janusz Korczak menorah, I’d like to continue to write more about this incredible man and share a picture of Irving Roth, the Director of the Temple Judea Holocaust Resource Center, where all of the proceeds of this menorah are being donated.

Below is a photo of a small personalized Janusz Korczak menorah ordered by one of my customers. I was so touched by his personalization that I ran over to Irving Roth’s house to get a picture of Mr. Roth with this menorah.

Janusz Korczak was at the forefront of children’s rights and wrote several books, which have been translated into 20 languages. His children’s books, which were groundbreaking at the time, featured the hero, King Matt, a child king who demanded children’s rights and playgrounds for his people.

Below is a list of a few of the books that Janusz Korczak has written:

  • King Matt the First
  • Ghetto Diary
  • How to Love A Child
  • When I am Little Again
  • The Child’s Right to Respect
  • Child of The Drawing Room
  • Children of the Streets

Despite widespread antisemitism, in 1937, The Polish Academy of Literature awarded Janusz Korczak with The Golden Laurel For Outstanding Literary Achievement.

Janusz Korczak had a weekly radio program where he discussed parenting and children’s issues. He was affectionately known as “The Old Doctor,” however, his radio program was cancelled when it was discovered that he was Jewish.

He was a tireless advocate for children and gave up his medical practice to run an orphanage for Jewish children. He instituted self-government and a Court of Peers for children to receive justice from their fellow children.

Below are a few of my favorite Janusz Korczak quotes taken from A Voice For the Child: The Inspirational Words of Janusz Korczak:

“Children are not the people of tomorrow, but people today. They are entitled to be taken seriously. They have a right to be treated by adults with tenderness and respect, as equals. They should be allowed to grow into whoever they were meant to be – the unknown person inside each of them is the hope for the future.”

“All children realizing my faults, would be glad to change me, to make me better. The poor youngsters cannot grasp the fact that my greatest fault is that I am no longer a child.

“A hundred children – a hundred people who are not ‘maybe sometime’, not ‘not now,’ not ‘tomorrow’ but are here and now, today. People who already exist.”

“If we are constantly astonished at the child’s perceptiveness, it means that we do not take them seriously.”

“The market value of the very young is small. Only in the sight of God is the apple blossom worth as much as the apple – greens shoots as much as a field of ripe corn.”

“Children, let your dreams and aspirations be proud. Set your sights high. Try to win glory. Something will always come out of it.”

If you would like a free brochure that I wrote that tells you more about the life of Janusz Korczak, just reply to this email with your name and address and I’ll be happy to send it to you to learn more.

Thank you so much for all of the calls and emails and the stories that you have shared with me. One customer bought four Janusz Korczak menorahs for her family and told me that her father was a pediatrician, and would have done the same as Janusz Korczak.

Enjoy the rest of the week!

P.S. It took 7 weeks, but I updated the 5778 Jewish Calendar. It’s a beautiful graphical representation of all the Jewish holidays of the year in a quick and easy to read format. See it here. I’m not sure if it will be legible, but I’m having a bookmark created out of this design, which I will be giving away for free with purchases over $50. Stay tuned!
